Conference Update

IMIA’s Asia Pacific Conference was held successfully from Aug 17-19 in Melbourne, Australia. The event saw three days of networking and knowledge sharing. The conference was kicked off with launch of first Australian Map in Chinese by the Chinese Consul General in Melbourne at a Welcome Reception hosted by Spatial Vision. During the day, an interactive MapHack Day was organised by Spatial Vision where cartographers, programmers and students worked together to build maps using open source tools and public data. Next two days at the conference in Rydges Melbourne were packed with 17 presentation with the theme “Power of Location”. The business connect session and breaks provided excellent opportunities for networking to everyone. The event concluded with the Annual IMIA AP Dinner and Map Awards function.

A quick review of the Conference

And here is what some of participants had to say about the conference…

Thanks for letting me present, it was a very well put together conference with a great crowd.

Tim Neal – Dept of Communications

Thanks very much the letter is much appreciated. I found the day to be very valuable.

Ron Lofton – USGS IMIA International President

I wanted to thank everyone for the great hospitality and congratulate everyone for hosting such a great conference.

Donnie Lee – RMIT Student

It was also nice that I had a chance to meet you and congratulations on such as successful conference; my fellow students and I agreed that we wish we had attended both days as it was so enjoyable and educational.

Roger Smith – Geographx NZ

I totally enjoyed the conference – thought it was very well organised and the quality of the presentations was exceptional. I’m also reminded when I come over of how many good friends I have made through IMIA – love it! So a big thank-you to you and the rest of your team (and what a bonus to bring home some of the silverware!)

John Payne – Earthinsite.com IMIA Life Member

It was great to catch up with all the ‘old’ IMIA mob again. I realised how much I missed you all. I think Peter Lennon really deserved his award and it was great to be invited to be part of it.

Ken Moule – Global GBM

Thanks for these and for running a very enjoyable conference…. Ken

James Hardie & Zoltan Kelly – Melbourne Water

Wished we could have come both days – but due to Budget cuts had to choose.
