Dear IMIA Member,

2013 Asia Pacific Regional Conference - Report

From all reports this year's Sydney conference proved to be a very productive and most enjoyable conference starting off with the Business Connect Session (pictured right). This has become one of the most valuable sessions to assist all delegates in finding new business partners and to re establish connections with existing clients. This session was followed by a diverse range of presentations provided by Millennium House hands on paper production, albeit very large sheets of paper! through to Esri's 'Walkabout with an iPhone' All presentations were well attended and kept delegates totally engaged. Along with specific forums covering cross sections of our industry the conference certainly provided a great two days of networking along with relaxed social interaction. Many thanks to all who participated at the conference and for the excellent presentations provided over the two days.

Strategic Planning Meeting
Prior to the conference the Asia Pacific Board held a Strategic Planning Meeting open to all IMIA members. This was an extremely important meeting with several members joining the Board and providing valuable input for our regional development into the future.

Asia Pacific Member Contributes To Award Winning Publication

Asia Pacific Member, Spatial Vision, has been commended for its extensive contributions to the Jacaranda World History Atlas for the Australian Curriculum, which was named joint winner of the Outstanding Book of the Year award at the 2013 Australian Educational Publishing Awards.

In an award ceremony held at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne on 22 August, the Jacaranda World History Atlas was named both Secondary Reference Resource of the Year and joint Outstanding Book of the Year.

The Australian Educational Publishing Awards are presented by the Australian Publishers Association. They are specifically designed to recognise the range of high-quality educational materials that are published during the year.

Award categories cover the different education levels of primary, secondary, TAFE and vocational, and tertiary education. In winning the Outstanding Book of the Year award, the Jacaranda World History Atlas beat more than 130 other publications that were nominated.

The Jacaranda World History Atlas was published by Jacaranda Wiley. Spatial Vision - Australia's leading specialist in spatial technologies - contributed a number of specially-designed educational maps to the publication.

Spatial Vision is extremely proud of the work that was done in the Jacaranda World History Atlas. These awards are recognition of the hard effort put in by the Spatial Vision team, and highlight Spatial Vision's continued dedication towards producing high quality, tailored material.

Monthly Map Updates On In-Car Navigation Systems

Navman, the New Zealand based manufacturer of marine electronics and GPS technology, will offer monthly map updates on its portable in-car GPS units in Australia and New Zealand. The new map data added each month will include new roads, and roads under construction, junctions, safety alerts, and new point of interests including sporting venues, hospitals and airports.

The company claims that the new feature called "Rapid Map Refresh" is a 'world first' in the portable navigation device (PND) category. It will come standard on Navman's new MY450LMT model, and will be an optional extra on the cheaper MY400LMT and EZY250LM units. The new in-car GPS devices are now available in both Australia and New Zealand. The monthly map updates available on the MY450LMT are "verified and validated" on an automatic basis. Navman's global mapping partner, HERE, says it recorded 42,000 kilometres of new roads, 7500 street name changes, 10,000 turn restrictions, 1800 new one-way streets, and 1800 new road direction signs in the yearly Australian map update from 2012 to 2013 alone. Rapid Map Refresh feature still requires users to connect their GPS device to a PC, but Navman says it is looking at ways to improve the update process.

2013 Australian Election Sausage Sizzle Map

A sausage sizzle is a traditional Australian dish, consisting of a barbecued sausage served on a slice of white bread. Apparently it is commonly sold to raise funds by Australian charities and at community events. It also appears to be an important part of Australian elections, when eating a sausage, before or after voting, is an important celebration of the democratic process.

The 2013 Election Sausage Sizzle Map shows the locations of sausage sizzle and cake stalls that will be operating on 7 September 2013, which is federal election day. If your stall is missing from the map don't despair as you can slap your sizzling sausage on the map by completing a short form.
