Map Industry Summit: London recap
On March 11, IMIA held its Map Industry Summit: London, a highly anticipated first full-day event in the UK. The event was sponsored and hosted by HarperCollins Publishers at The News Building and by Stanfords at their globally renowned map store in historic Covent Garden. The day opened with remarks from Alex Beecroft, Managing Director at Collins. Attendees representing 17 companies in the map industry, most of them IMIA members, traveled from their locations in the UK, US, Canada, India, Germany, Austria, Latvia, Serbia, and Australia.
They were treated to informative presentations and a panel discussion by:
- Mike Parker, Author of Mapping the Roads: Building Modern Britain and Map Addict: A Tale of Obsession, Fudge and the Ordnance Survey
- Catherine Cheetham, Head of the Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (PCGN)
- Zoran Nikolić, Author of The Atlas of Unusual Borders
The audience then participated in a Rapid Networking session, the popular IMIA event feature that facilitates proper introductions and brief B2B discussions among members and prospective members. Those in attendance enjoyed the high-energy exercise and will benefit from the engagement for years to come.
After closing remarks by IMIA President Bridger DeVille of East View Map Link, the event transitioned across the Thames to Stanfords, where guests were treated to drinks and light faire in the world’s largest map store. This was the third annual reception hosted by IMIA Treasurer and Stanfords CEO, Vivien Godfrey, on the eve of the London Book Fair. The real highlight of the evening was Craig’s IMIA Geography Quiz put on my quizmaster Craig Balfour, Head of Creative Services for HarperCollins. Those knowledgeable and fast enough to answer correctly were lucky to win a miniature Scotch or Welch Whiskey.
IMIA thanks the attendees, gracious hosts, and sponsors of the 2024 Map Industry Summit: London. We look forward to gathering our members again this year in Denver, Toronto, and Frankfurt. Stay tuned for announcements on these upcoming events, and please register now so we can make sure to include you and your company in the programming and festivities. Until next time, cheers!
