Maintain a worldwide cartographic collection of over 4.7 million items, dating from the 14th century to the present. Principal provider of geographic and cartographic information to Congress, and also provides reference services to Federal Agencies, the scholarly community and the public. The mission is to document the history of cartography, with special emphasis on recording the history of cartographic production in the United States. Seeks to acquire modern cartographic materials (hared-copy and digital) that support the development of a comprehensive and up-to-date national map collection.
