Recap of the Members-only Annual Meeting & Social

Last Thursday, IMIA members from around the globe gathered virtually for our final event for 2024. The Annual Meeting & Social highlighted this year’s successes, including 13 new members, six events, five of which were in-person and one being our first in Toronto, Canada.

Before breaking out into groups of 4-5 for socializing and sharing their favorite mugs/map products, our members voted on the 2025 Board Slate. We welcome the following to our board:

Shortlists Announced For The 2025 Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards Presented By Viking

The shortlists have been announced for the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards (ESTWAs) presented by Viking. Taking readers all around the globe, the 18 shortlisted books are from a variety of debut and bestselling authors from multiple publishers including independent presses.

The awards, that were launched in 2015, celebrate excellence in travel writing and offer recognition to the best travel writers in the world. For the second year in a row, Stanfords, the world-renowned independent retailer of maps and travel books, is partnering with Viking, a global leader in experiential travel, to present four awards.


In memory of Will Pringle

Having won multiple international awards and set an exceptional standard for mapping in Australia and worldwide, Australian Geographic’s head cartographer, Will Pringle, 80, passed away on 16 November, working until the end, and the accolades have been pouring in.

A beloved grandfatherly figure around the office, Will worked for Australian Geographic for 37 years, starting on the journal’s fourth issue, with edition No. 183 his last.

Annual Map Design Competition is Open

The Cartography and Geographic Information Society (CaGIS) is pleased to announce the 52nd Annual Map Design Competition, open to all mapmakers in the United States and Canada for maps completed or published during 2024.

The purpose of the competition is to promote interest in map design and recognize significant design advances in cartography. The focus of this competition is design; therefore, judging is based on cartographic design criteria, such as creativity, text (including spelling and grammar), balance, unity, visual hierarchy, clarity, use of color, and subject matter.

Entry is free for all. Submissions are due by January 31, 2025.
