Perfect. Many very interesting and technical talks on GIS Very much worth the visit as I learned heaps about GIS We are just starting out in the spatial business and wanted to learn and meet people I am looking for job opportunities and this is a great place to meet many employers

These were some real comments by real people about the great success of the International Map Industry Association (IMIA) Meetup in Brisbane on the 21st of April 2016. The meetup was second in the series of meetups planned this year and more than 50 spatial professionals, government officials, spatial business owners, and representatives of various organisations participated. The first Meetup in Melbourne in February was a big success and this was an even bigger event. The venue was the Landcentre in Brisbane which is home to the Queensland Government’s mapping and surveying agency.

It was a very fast-paced lightning talk of 10-15 minutes talk from each of the four presenters. The event was kicked off by the past-International President of IMIA, Peter Lennon. Rob Boegheim from Hema Maps, the sponsors of the event, welcomed everyone and all agreed with him that this was an exciting new way to share information and was very encouraged to see such a large turnout of spatial professionals. Many had travelled a long way to get there and many more had found time in their busy schedule to participate in the lively discussions. There were opportunities for socialising and networking both before and after the talks. At the end, the participants thanked the organisers and were keen to attend more such events in the future.

The presenters were swamped with questions both during and after the event. There were quite some requests for the presentations. The presentations for three of them and a short description for all four presentations can be found below. Keep watching this space for more such events. The buzz created by this event was short, sharp and sensational.

Following the success of the inaugural Meetup in Melbourne in January 2016, the next IMIA Meetup is scheduled to be held on the 21st of April, 2016 at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines offices in Landcentre, Woolloongabba. Participation is free for this event, but please register beforehand to avoid disappointment.

The IMIA Meetups are lightning talks of 10 minutes per speaker and five minutes for questions lasting a total of one hour. The targeted, informative and relevant topics of the presentation intend to share the experiences and innovations of real industry leaders in the field of mapping, cartography and spatial business.

Audience feedback from the past Meetup has been overwhelmingly positive with many complementing the speakers and the format. The pre- and post- meetup drinks for the Meetup has been sponsored by Hema Maps with support from DNRM for venue and organising the event.

Due to constraints with space and to keep the participation to relevant industry leaders and trailblazers, there will be limited spots available so please register early to avoid disappointment. Looking forward to your participation on the 21st of April 2016 at Level 1, Landcentre DNRM, at 3:30pm.
