Members’ Annual Meeting & Social

IMIA members gathered virtually last Thursday for our Annual Meeting and Social to approve our new board slate, connect with colleagues, and close out another successful year.

The members unanimously voted on Carl Rauch, Freytag & Berndt, and Kevin Lance, National Geographic Maps, and returning board members Tristan Lyttle, Avenza Systems, and Jethro Lennox, HarperCollins Publishers.

The remaining board members are President Bridger DeVille, Benchmark Maps; Treasurer Vivien Godfrey, Edward Stanford Group Limited; Thierry Jaccoud; Alex Lee, East View Map Link; Mani Singh, NextByte Technologies.

Additionally, the IMIA Board voted Dave Jay, National Geographic Maps, as a member of the Advisory Board, joining Mark Cygan, Esri; Ariel Doumbouya, US Geological Survey; and Bennett Moe, Headwall Media, LLC.

The event also bid a fond farewell to board members Dave Knipfer, Mapping Specialists; Greg Lauer of Brisbane, and Hans Niemeyer, Interkart GmbH.

The last event of 2023 highlighted our successful events, both in-person and virtual, as well as our annual partners and 11 new members. The attendees then split into breakout groups for networking and to showcase some of their favorite map-related products, including a map from the world’s largest atlas and the viral book sensation Terrible Maps, a product of IMIA members Lovell Johns and published by HarperCollins Publishers.

We thank all our members for a wonderful year, and we wish you happy holidays!

Ethics in Cartography Call for Papers

Cartographic Perspectives is planning a special issue on Ethics in Cartography for their Fall 2024 issue. It will include two peer-reviewed papers and a series of “case studies” which can take nearly any narrative form.

They are looking for short texts (1,000-3,000 words) that address ethical dilemmas industry professionals have encountered in the map world, and how they were (or were not) resolved. Ideally, the text should lean less toward theory and more toward practice, highlighting the struggle with ethical quandaries. Unresolved conflicts are acceptable as not all ethical issues are neat and simple.

If you are interested in submitting a short text, contact Nat Case at nat@incasellc.com or Aileen Buckley at abuckley@esri.com.

The submission deadline is January 20, 2024.

Footways creates networks of quiet and enjoyable streets for walking and turns them into eye-catching maps. The maps boost walking on A-to-B trips and change the way people see cities, considering them from a pedestrian perspective.

The flagship product is Central London Footways, an A1 folded paper map now in its third edition. The map design is by Applied Information and it is Lithograph printed in five special Pantone inks. Central London Footways was one of Stanfords’ best-selling maps in 2023 and Network Rail distributes free copies from its London mainline train stations.

The digital version, now designed with Mapbox, has been viewed more than two million times. The maps also reveal interesting and hidden features, which people can enjoy as they walk.

Co-founders David Harrison and Emma Griffin work with councils and organizations across London, creating maps, advising on walking infrastructure and embedding maps on destinations’ Visit pages.

California Snowflakes: The record snowfall of 2022-2023 entered by Kenneth Field

Judges’ comment: This map achieves its stated objective well and has a striking design, particularly in terms of colors. It presents complex geospatial data in a simple, clear way, with a strong emphasis on the route itself and how it can be assessed. Judges liked the various formats in which the map was presented, and the neat combination of a metro-style map with the group-level POIs.
